Van Aert’s rival Mathieu Van der Poel suffered a heavy fall on a slick descent on the penultimate lap and had to be carried from the course on a stretcher.

Bad Crash for Mathieu van der Poel at Azencross Loenhout

Mathieu Van der Poel crashed Thursday at Azencross Loenhout and lay unconscious, eventually taken off the course on a stretcher. We are hoping it was precautionary and we send him our best wishes.

UPDATE: Van der Poel let fans know he is ok via Twitter: ‘I’m ok, nasty crash which was my own fault but I got lucky after all. Thanks for all the messages!’
